Dark and Stormy

dark and stormyThe Dark and Stormy cocktail is an easy-to-make, refreshing drink that combines dark rum with ginger beer and lime juice. The preferred rum in a Dark and Stormy, mostly due to heavy marketing, is Gosling’s Black Seal Rum. It makes a fine drink indeed, but play around with other dark rums to see what you prefer.

When making a Dark and Stormy, the most important thing is to use actual ginger beer. Ginger ale just won’t do, as it’s not nearly spicy enough to stand up against the rum. Depending on your rum of choice, play with the ratios to get the right balance of rich rum to spicy ginger beer. From there, the addition of some fresh lime juice really ties the room together.

Dark and Stormy

2 ounces dark rum
3 ounces ginger beer
1/2 ounce fresh lime juice

Combine all ingredients in a collins glass with ice, and stir. Garnish with a lime wedge.

These are great with freshly squeezed orange juice as well. Add to taste. The ginger beer is strong but really carries the drink.

Just had my first D&S in a local’s bar in Bermuda. They would never put lime or lime juice in the national drink. They didn’t bother with the lime wedge either, that’s only for the tourists.
