tincup american whiskey

Tincup American Whiskey hails from Colorado, where it was founded by Jess Graber, the same gentleman behind Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey. It’s comprised of corn, rye and malted barley. It’s technically bourbon, but Tincup has a higher rye content than most. And interestingly, they don’t use the word bourbon on the label, preferring to stick with “American Whiskey.”

The actual juice comes from MGP Ingredients in Lawrenceville, Indiana, the same distiller behind several popular rye whiskeys, including Bulleit and High West. But Tincup puts its own Colorado stamp on the product by blending the spirit with Rocky Mountain water before bottling.

On the nose, Tincup is easygoing with notes of caramel, apples, oak and spice. It’s light on the palate with flavors of rye, sweet corn, toffee and more spices. The rye is prominent but not as prominent as we’d expected from a “high rye” whiskey. The finish is soft and mild, with some cinnamon, vanilla and a mild raisin note.

This is a very drinkable, everyday kind of whiskey. It’s nothing fancy and nothing particularly complex, but it’s well balanced and goes down easy. And the best part: the bottle’s topped with a tip cup, so wherever you bring your bottle, the handy little drinking receptacle follows.
