sagatiba pura cachacaCachaca is the national liquor of Brazil, the base for Caipirinha cocktails and just generally delicious. It’s a sugarcane spirit akin to Brazilian rum, but whereas rum is typically made from molasses, cachaça is distilled from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice. Anyway, it’s good stuff, and we’ve got a bottle right here — Sagatiba Pura Cachaca.

Sagatiba Pura Cachaca is an unaged spirit that pours crystal clear. On the nose, it’s very light and clean, with aromas of fresh sugarcane, vanilla and hints of vegetal grass. Take a sip, and the flavor remains very clean. It totally skips that earthy, funky, almost petrol-like note you’ll taste in some cachacas. Instead, the flavors lean more toward tropical fruits and citrus, plus some sugary sweetness. It’s warm on the back end and finishes dry.

Cachaca isn’t typically consumed straight. At least not here in America, where it’s primarily used for Caipirinhas and other cocktails. But Sagatiba Pura is incredibly easy to sip. It’s mild without sacrificing flavor, and from start to finish, it’s pleasantly refreshing. Even if you haven’t enjoyed cachacas in the past, you might enjoy this one.

Sagatiba also makes an aged cachaca, called Sagatiba Velha. It’s pot distilled in small batches, and then matured in American white oak casks for a minimum of two years. All that yields some really interesting notes of butterscotch and bananas.
