kah blanco tequilaKAH Tequila has made waves in recent years. Partly because it’s solid, award-winning tequila — it was named the #1 rated blanco tequila by the Beverage Tasting Institute. But also because the spirit line is packaged in ornately painted skulls. And that tends to draw people’s attention.

We’ve sampled this one a few times over the past couples years, but usually as part of a cocktail or a hasty, celebratory shot. So finally, after seeing the black, white and yellow Day of the Dead skull bottles staring back at us from behind the bar, we’re cracking one open for some thorough tasting. Let’s begin with that blanco.

On the nose, KAH Blanco Tequila is full of rich, cooked agave, plus some sweet vanilla and peppery spice. Drink up to find a warm, inviting spirit, with lots more cooked agave and vanilla. Some buttery frosting comes through along with more of that spice. It’s fairly well balanced, and nothing seems out of place. But we could’ve used a bit more of everything in this one. It’s flavorful and generally solid, but it lacks some of the character we’ve seen in other blancos.

Unlike the Beverage Tasting Institute, this isn’t our #1 tequila. Maybe we just expected too much. It is good, though, and if you haven’t tried it, it’s worth seeking out the next time you come across those colorful skulls.
