flor de cana 25 centenario

Flor de Caña Centanario 25 is the top of the line rum from the Nicaragua-based distillery. They’ve been in the game for more than 125 years, and have learned a thing or two about making rum during that time. Centenario 25 is the culmination of that experience. Like all Flor de Caña rums, its life begins with sugarcane grown in volcanic rich soil, and the liquid is aged in bourbon barrels sealed with banana fiber, a unique practice that gives the rum a distinguished tropical note.

Flor de Caña Centanario 25 pours a dark amber in the glass. It’s full of caramel, chocolate, raisins and dates on the nose, which give it a port-like quality. Keep drinking, and things turn sweeter, with more caramel, plus some vanilla and banana. That’s all deftly balanced with oak, a hint of orange zest and toasted almonds. That sweetness carries through toward the end, which is long, smooth and accented with another welcome touch of oak.

There’s plenty going on here, but for such a mature rum, things remain very smooth and easy going. (It should be noted that the 25 on the label refers to the average age of the blend–so this isn’t an entirely 25-year-old rum.) If you’re looking for a classy nightcap–maybe something to enjoy with a rich cigar or some dark chocolate–you may have found your match in Flor de Caña Centenario 25. That’s assuming your rum budget can withstand the price tag.
