damoiseau virgin cane rumDamoiseau Rum hails from Guadalupe, part of the French West Indies. While Damoiseau is Guadeloupe’s leading Rhum Agricole producer, the company’s spirits have just recently become available in the U.S. market. We got our hands on a bottle of Damoiseau Virgin Cane Rum as well as Damoiseau’s aged VSOP Rhum Vieux. We’ll start with the former.

Damoiseau Virgin Cane Rum is made from distilling fermented sugar cane juice. The liquid is then aged for three to six months in barrels before being cut with water and bottled at 40% ABV. It pours clear in the glass, and on the nose it’s full of grassy sugarcane, pineapple, toasted nuts and assorted notes of green vegetation. Drink up to find lots of flavors, ranging from more sugarcane to fruit, floral and herbal accents, peppery spice and something akin to raw radishes. It finishes fresh and dry.

Damoiseau Virgin Cane Rum is a nice spirit from start to finish. It’s intensely aromatic and flavorful, but it eschews some of the petrol notes apparent in many other agricole-style rums. The mix of fruit, spice and vegetation will let this one stand up in cocktails like a Ti Punch, or try subbing it for molasses-based rums or even tequila in some of your favorite cocktails.
