Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with These Tequila Cocktails

May 5. Cinco de Mayo. The time when we all come together to commemorate the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla… by drinking tequila, eating guacamole and wearing large hats. So to that end–or the tequila part, at least–here are a handful of Cinco de Mayo cocktail recipes to celebrate accordingly.

El Anticuado


2 oz Santera Anejo Tequila
1 sugar cube
5 drops Bittercube Bolivar Bitters

Muddle sugar cube with bitters. Add tequila and stir. Strain over a large rock and garnish with an orange peel.

paloma cocktail

2 oz blanco or reposado tequila
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
Pinch of salt
Grapefruit soda

Pour tequila into a collins glass. Add lime, salt and ice. Top with grapefruit soda, stir and garnish with a lime wheel or grapefruit wedge.

Reform War cocktail


1 oz El Silencio Espadin
1 oz English Harbour Rum (or any English Style Rum)
1/2 oz Giffard Creme de Banana
1/2 oz Pedro Ximenez Sherry
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
1 Dash Angostura Bitters

Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail coupe. Garnish with fresh nutmeg.

Abuela's Old Fashioned

1 1/2 oz Tequila Don Julio Reposado
1/3 oz Buñuelo Syrup*
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
1 dash Chocolate Mole Bitters

Combine ingredients into an Old Fashioned glass with ice and stir. Garnish with an orange and lemon twist.

*Buñuelo Syrup

4 cups sugar
2 cups water
1/4 tsp lemon juice
2 cinnamon sticks
1 vanilla stick
2 star anise

Bring cracked cinnamon, vanilla sticks and star anise to a boil in 2 cups of water on high heat. Let boil for 10 minutes. Add sugar and stir until dissolved. Lower heat and let simmer for 1 minute. Strain into a large container. Add lemon juice and let cool.
