captain morgan 1671 spiced rumLast week, Captain Morgan announced a limited-time addition to its rum portfolio: 1671 Commemorative Blend Spiced Rum, which is finished with Spanish oak. The new offering pays tribute to Captain Henry Morgan and his 1671 raid of Panama City, in which he lost five ships battling the Spanish before eventually capturing Fort San Lorenzo.

Captain Morgan 1671 is St Croix rum that’s infused with a blend of spices and then finished with Spanish oak to impart additional flavors. On the nose, you’ve got potent vanilla and caramel, plus ginger, brown sugar and spice. Drink up for a full-bodied mouthfeel and flavors ranging from chocolate and vanilla to dark fruits, cinnamon and cloves. The finish brings some orange notes, along with brown sugar and mild oak, but things close with a cloying, fake vanilla sweetness that’s overpowering and altogether unpleasant.

The finish aside, this new rum from Captain Morgan is an interesting take on the original — and it gets bonus points for the bottle design — but we’d have preferred to see more Spanish oak influences and less sugar. That said, tasting it neat (like we’re inclined to do) isn’t really the point here. Simply pouring it over ice will temper that sweetness, but
mixing it with cola is your best bet.

As mentioned above, Captain Morgan 1671 Commemorative Blend is a limited edition expression, so if you’d like to try it for yourself, go grab a bottle. The bottle itself — a gold-embossed jug emblazoned with the figure of Captain Morgan — is handsome enough to warrant picking one up.
