yamazaki sherry cask

Yamazaki has had an interest in sherry since long before its Sherry Cask 2016 hit shelves. Sherry cask whiskey has been part of the distillery’s lineup since 1924, and the experience shows.

This Yamazaki Sherry Cask single malt has a deep, reddish-brown hue, unsurprising considering its finish in an Oloroso cask. The nose recalls sherry as well, along with coffee, brown sugar and a borderline tomato-like savory note.

It’s light and incredibly dry on the palate. Flavors of powdered cocoa, tobacco and hazelnuts slowly emerge as a substantial warmth and spiciness (it’s 96 proof, after all) builds in the center of the palate. This spice is a slow-burner, which extends into a long, bittersweet finish that’s reminiscent of a fantastic cigar.

For those used to light-bodied, sweeter Japanese whiskeys, Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2016 is something entirely unique, and a reminder of how bold and different great whiskey can be in the hands of the right distiller.
