pogues irish whiskey

You might know The Pogues as a Celtic punk band that was big in the ’80s and ’90s. But now, you can know the Pogues as whiskey people, because they’ve just released The Pogues Irish Whiskey. Having consumed their share of whiskey over the years, the band was involved in creating their self-titled spirit from start to finish. And considering that St Patrick’s Day is this week, it seems like a fine time to give this one a taste.

The Pogues Irish Whiskey is crafted at West Cork Distillers and comprised of 50% 10-year single malt Irish whiskey that was aged in sherry casks and 50% five to seven year Irish grain whiskey that was aged in bourbon casks.

On the nose, it is light and easygoing, with aromas of malt, cereal grains, honey and fruit. Give it a minute to settle, and there are hints of milk chocolate and cream. Take a sip, and things go mostly the same direction, with malt flavors leading the way alongside honey, pear and some mild spices like pepper and ginger. The mouthfeel is light and watery, and everything finishes dry, short and easy.

This is a perfectly adequate whiskey. The mouthfeel leaves something to be desired, and the flavors are light throughout. But those flavors are friendly and mostly balanced. The Pogues Irish Whiskey will do the job this St. Patrick’s Day or anytime you’re in the mood for something that goes down easy.
