teeling single malt irish whiskey

After reviving the historic whiskey brand in 2011, the Teeling Whiskey Co. became the first new distillery in Dublin in 125 years. And since then they’ve quickly established themselves as a real contender in the Irish whiskey market. We reviewed Teeling Small Batch last year, and now it’s onto the Single Malt.

Teeling Single Malt Irish Whiskey is distilled in copper pot stills from 100% malted barley and comprised of several aged whiskeys, with some dating back to 1991. It’s a vatting of five different wine casks–Sherry, Port, Madeira, White Burgundy and Cabernet Sauvignon.

On the nose, Teeling Single Malt is light and lively, with lots of malt shining through, plus notes of citrus, melon and pear and an underlying toffee sweetness. So far, this is easygoing stuff. Take a sip, and that laid back nature is pumped up a notch. Dried fruits and vanilla lead the charge alongside sweet honeysuckle, and spices like nutmeg and cloves begin to show themselves. It’s sweet, but not too sweet, and things keep moving drier as wood tannins finally emerge toward the end.

Teeling Single Malt is tasty, well-balanced stuff that shows real promise as an everyday dram. Drink it with food, by itself or whenever else the time seems right.
