macallan edition no. 1

I was recently invited into the Edrington Group offices to sample the latest release from The Macallan. Dubbed The Macallan Edition No. 1, this is the first release in a series that will see new whiskies released annually. Edition No. 1 is drawn from eight different styles of oak casks–seven European and one American–that were seasoned with sherry in Spain. That’s a lot of different casks, and each contributes its own unique character. But it’s that overlying sherry influence that’s the real hallmark of Macallan whiskies.

On the nose, Edition No. 1 is rich with orange oils and citrus, plus deeper, sweeter notes of toffee, chocolate, raisins and dark sherried fruit. On the palate it’s warm with cinnamon and ginger. Here the oak begins to show itself alongside hints of honey and more fruit. The finish is soft, smooth and lengthy.

The Macallan Edition No. 1 is a real treat. The interplay of sherry and brighter fruit elements complement the tempered sweetness and create a balanced, flavorful dram. Given the success of this first edition, I’m eager to see what comes next.
