botran rumThe Botran family has been making rum in Guatemala for six decades. Their rum lineup includes the notable Botran Solera 1893 and Botran Reserva, which won a gold medal at the Ministry of Rum’s 2010 tasting competition.

Botran Solera 1893

Botran Solera 1893 is an amber colored rum aged in American oak barrels that previously stored whiskey, sherry and port. The rum has a pleasant aroma with plenty of oak, plus some sweet caramel, toasted vanilla and fruit. On the palate the rum is rich and lush, with flavors of maple, honey and caramel, plus a slight background of orange and a bit of cocoa on the finish. The cane sugar presence is very prominent, but tempered by a slight tannic bitterness imparted by the oak. Overall, it’s a very smooth sipper and worth sampling.

Botran Reserva

Botran Reserva is a blend of rums aged 5 to 14 years using the same multi cask aging process as the Solera. The rum is very sweet on the nose, with lots of dried apricot and vanilla, plus a  hint of spice. The sweetness extends to the taste, with flavors of vanilla, banana and caramel. The oaky finish is slightly dry and lingers on the tongue. Overall it’s an impressive, well-balanced rum with tons of character. Plus, it’s an incredible bargain at just $25.
