kilbeggan irish whiskey reviewKilbeggan Irish Whiskey traces its roots back to 1757 and the founding of the Old Kilbeggan Distillery. That’s more than 250 years. For some perspective, in 1757 the British Empire was just establishing itself in India. America was a collection of 13 scrappy colonies. And the French populace wouldn’t revolt for another 32 years. So let the record show that Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey is old.

But despite its 250+ year history, Kilbeggan is largely unknown outside of Ireland. This is due partly to the dominance of Scotch and Bourbon, but also to the market prominence of Irish whiskey brands like Jameson and Bushmill’s. So, if you’re unfamiliar, allow us to introduce Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey.

On the nose, this whiskey is full of grains, tropical fruits and citrus, plus some sweet, creamy vanilla. It’s light and youthful on the palate, with toasty malts, honey, toffee and spice. The dry finish is slightly astringent, but not off putting, and there’s enough vanilla and toasted oak to round things out.

All in all, it’s an easy-drinking — somewhat simple — Irish whiskey with a solid balance between sweet and spice. And while it’s suitable as a daily dram, its affordable price tag makes it a good base for cocktails. Try Kilbeggan in your next Irish Coffee, or pair it with citrus, sugar and ginger beer for a refreshing Irish Mule.
