hophead vodkaAnchor Distilling Company has been busy of late. In November, the San Francisco-based outfit introduced a couple of Japanese whiskeys, and just last month, they announced Hophead Vodka. While most vodka comes from grain or potatoes, this latest innovation is distilled entirely from two types of dried hops. So, while it’s not a flavored vodka, the fresh and aromatic character of hops permeates the spirit, creating lots of flavor.

Hophead Vodka was thought up by Anchor’s President David King, who — after joining Anchor in 2011 — thought it fitting to channel the company’s brewing tradition, and plentiful hops, in crafting the new spirit.

“We’ve been looking to add a vodka to our portfolio for quite some time, but couldn’t seem to find the right fit. So we decided to distill our own, blending the history and heritage of our brewery and distillery.”

You can try Hophead in the typical cocktails and with the usual mixers, or try crafting the drink below, which is a spin on the classic Vesper.

West Coast Vesper

1 oz Junipero Gin
½ oz Maurin Quina

Stir all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice, then strain into a chilled Champagne coupe. Garnish with an orange peel.
