cruz silver tequilaCruz Tequila is a relatively new operation that got its start in 2005 when three friends in Arizona decided to enter the tequila business. Their distillery is based in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, and they produce three 100% blue agave tequilas — silver, reposado and anejo — by employing traditional methods. We’ve got a bottle of silver on our hands, so let’s take it for a spin.

Cruz Silver Tequila pours crystal clear in the glass. On the nose it’s light and sweet, with notes of baked agave, vanilla, citrus and mild pepper. The aromas are soft and pleasant with very little burn. Taking a sip, we found more vanilla, cooked agave and orange citrus, but the soft palate also yields some fresh vegetation, cinnamon and something almost minty. Nearing the finish, things move drier and spicier, with more prominent pepper notes lingering until the end.

This is solid stuff. It’s fairly indicative of a highland tequila, with that citrus fruitiness and soft agave. It’s an easy-drinking blanco that won’t replace some of our favorites in the category, but it certainly earns a spot on our bar.

And speaking of our bar, Cruz looks handsome on it. The bottle is composed of hand-blown glass with a polished aluminum cap, and each bottle is hand numbered and signed at the distillery. So there’s that.
