This week Beefeater Gin announced the launch of Burrough’s Reserve, a new gin that’s rested in oak barrels before bottling. This is Beefeater’s first permanent addition to their product range since Beefeater 24 launched in 2008. Alhough, while Beefeater 24 is widely available, Burrough’s Reserve will only be released in limited quantities each year.
Burrough’s Reserve is produced by Beefeater’s Master Distiller, Desmond Payne. He starts with the original Beefeater recipe refined by founder James Burrough in the 1860s. From there, Burrough’s Reserve is distilled in Beefeater’s “Still Number 12,” which dates back to the 19th century. This small still is known for producing spirits with lots of complexity and character, hence their choosing this still for the new product.
After distillation, Burrough’s Reserve is rested in Lillet oak barrels hand-selected by Desmond Payne. Aging gin is not particularly new — Ransom’s been doing it for years — but Burrough’s Reserve is certainly the first gin to be aged in old Lillet casks. These barrels imbue the gin with subtle oaky characteristics and the residual Lillet, which results in a slight gold color and lots of nuanced flavor. Beefeater recommends drinking this gin neat to allow the subtle citrus flavors to develop along with the juniper and gentle spice.
Burrough’s Reserve will launch in Spain in June and is slated to reach the U.S. market in October. So keep an eye out for it. This is an exciting release.
